White Winter Wonderland

Last December and the first part of this month of January were particularly cold here in the Netherlands and in Europe in general. There was a lot of snow and frost, too. Everything looked really pretty and with it happening around Christmas time, I think it was a bit magical!

Now all the snow and the ice have melted and we have gone back to the usual kind of weather we have around here: rainy, misty, windy... Winter is not yet over and we might still get to see more of White Wonderland, but in case we don't, I wanted to share some of the photos I took around Christmas time and the first week or so, of this month. You can click on each photo to view it larger:

Ice-skaters having fun in one of the canals of Zwolle

Me taking a walk in the "Kuinderbos", in the Noordoostpolder region.

"Fresh" mushrooms I found while taking a stroll in the Westerveldse Bos, near my house in Zwolle.

A view of the pond in the Westerveldse Bos

A street in my neighbourhood after a heavy snowfall around Christmas.

A bicycle path completely covered in snow and a little girl trying to get home from school, pushing her bike along.

A nice car in the parking area of the shooting club we visited in the Kuinderbos, Noordoostpolder.

A bridge over a canal in my neighbourhood in Zwolle.

Farm houses almost outside Zwolle.
This view reminds me of the Argentinean flag!

I took hundreds of photos which still have to be edited, but I hope that you liked this sampler of the white winter in the Netherlands!

    Sí, es muy bonito y el frío la verdad que no me molesta para nada!

    Elise,
    Thanks!! Yes, you're right - beautiful but it can also turn into a real pain...

  6. Mooi! I mainly saw the urban snow here in town, so it's nice to see some pictures with all the trees and fields covered in snow! I love the second picture of you with the snow-covered woods. How stunning!

    I admit, I wouldn't mind a little bit more snow. ;) Thanks for sharing your photos!

  8. @Alison,
    Here in Zwolle, we get to see more of the countryside, there are so many farms around, not far from the city centre, actually.
    Thank you for your visit!

    @Claudia,
    Si, es tan diferente a lo que nosotros estamos acostumbrados!
    Gracias por pasar!

  9. What still suprises me is the fact that in two days it can be gone. You have then to look back at your photos to believe it. Snow can delay the speed of your life (traffic jams, some plants die, your shoes get damaged), but it is so much fun !!

  10. Lindas fotos, Aledys! Magicas mesmo!!
    Parabens!
    Ja vi que vale a pena visitar Zwolle tambem quando neva!
    Espero que ainda neve mais! Eu adoro neve!

  11. @Anita,
    Well, I think that sth that was nice this time, is that it was very cold for quite a time and that made it last for a while. Normally yes, in one or two days is gone!
    About the shoes: I got used to my snow boots and then when I tried wearing something else with high heels, I couldn't walk! :o)

    @Presépio,
    Yes, Zwolle has lots of open spaces, "boerderijen" and forests, so the landscapes are very nice!

  13. @Droomvla,
    I'm sorry to hear you have a cold!
    We'll see, I wouldn't mind a little bit more of snow before the winter is over, to tell you the truth!
    Thanks for your comment!

  14. Stunning photos! No matter how much I whine for summer when I'm freezing to death during the winter, one look at a photo of snow is enough to make me wish winter would never end. Unfortunately, we didn't get much snow in Ourense this year but some flakes did manage to hit the ground before melting. That's when I was outside dancing, lol.

  15. Aledys, what lovely photos..specially the one of the Bos. I like the snow too and really enjoyed during the snow fall. The lake behind my flt had completely frozen and it was so amazing to get to walk on the lake :)

  18. @Xoán,
    Ourense doesn't strike me as a place where it snows very frequently, does it?
    I wanted to see a bit more of snow and my wish has been granted, for it snowed last night!
    Thanks for your visit!

    @Orangesplaash,
    Thanks a lot for leaving your comments!!
    For me it's still a new experience to see frozen lakes and waterways. WHere I come from, we don't get to see that at all.

    @Vagamundos,
    THanks a lot!! We got a bit more of snow last night, it looks nice! how about there?

    @Lopa,
    Yes, we're back to White Wonderland for a while.
    Thanks a lot for your comment!

  19. Very pretty! I heard this was the most snow the NL has seen in 30 years. I'm glad I was here to see it.

    We got a little snow here Saturday night, but it melted yesterday :-(

    Thank you for visiting the blog!

    @Aggie,
    Yes, all this snow does make a difference! Many people are not happy, of course, about driving on the ice and snow, but at least everything looks pretty.
    THanks for your comments!

    @Miguel,
    Ya estás en Bélgica? Espero no te congeles y que lo pases genial.
    Saludines!

  22. Brrrrr. That wasn't just a blanket of snow, that was a whole set of beddings! :)
    Great pics, Aledys, and you made me grin with that comment about the Argentine flag because what came to my mind was Maradona's uniform, LOL.

  23. @buday,
    Oh dear - what a joy it was, in the olden days, when we could see Maradona donning the Argentinean colours...! And what an embarrassment it is today! :o)
    Thanks for your comments!
